Abstract:

Super-hydrophobic coatings have been of interest for many commercial and military applications to overcome failures and issues arising from water damage in unwanted places. Traditional super-hydrophobic coatings are created by either roughening the surface or by depositing a material with nanoscale roughness which is subsequently treated with a low surface energy material. The engineering challenge is the durability of the film while commercial challenge has been to engineer surface attributes with an economical technique.
We present a durability-improved nano-composite super-hydrophobic film consisting of alumina nano-particles bridged with a silsesquioxane matrix. The film has shown excellent hydrolytic stability for long periods of time (over 10x improvement over previously reported). This super-hydrophobic film is created by using an economical, fast, hybrid CVD/ALD coating technique.
