An Overview of Tunable Ti:Sapphire Laser Technology and Applications

Abstract

Titanium-doped sapphire has been developed as a laser material for use in tunable lasers and ultra-short pulse lasers with a variety of scientific and commercial applications. We will review some of the features of the material and its use in applications including biological imaging of tissue, automated thickness measurements of opaque films in semiconductor processing, and materials processing.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Rich Boggy is currently the manager of the Product Engineering Group at Spectra-Physics, with responsibility for a wide range of solid state laser products. In his 24 years at S-P he has led development projects including the Millennia (solid state green laser), the Tsunami (scientific ultra-short pulse Ti:sapphire laser), and the Mai Tai (automated ultra-short pulse Ti:sapphire laser). He has a Ph.D. in atomic physics from Indiana University.
